Shanghai is a busy, bright, shiny new city that has been dragged into the modern world.It is trying desperately to be a European kind of cosmopolitan and it is, up to a point, in certain linited areas.
Go beyond the bright city centre, and the lovely 'Bund' , full of classic buildings, and that's where the gloss rubs off. In time it may change but, as they say, 'it's a nice place to visit but...'

Interesting comparison -- though Shanghai has obvious limits, I understand.
I've resisted visiting China, ever since I found out decades ago that my inability to detect tones meant I could not learn Chinese. (Dumb reason, admittedly...)
China is a brilliant place to visit. If I had time I'd love to explore it as a tourist rather than purely for business.
This is one place you really need a guide who speaks the language. English is still patchy and mostly, inadequate. Still, as a visitor it's important to remember that it's not their obligation to spak my language.
I just wish the businessmen were less grasping.
